Thank you for your interest in research recruitment from the Center for Adolescent and Young Adult Health!
A little about us:
The Adolescent Medicine and Young Adult Division sees over 7000 visits annually for primary care and consultative adolescent medicine at UPMC University Center at 120 Lytton Avenue in Oakland and at two suburban practices in the North and South Hills, as well as outreach we provide at multiple community sites. These clinics are called Center for Adolescent and Young Adult Health or CAYAH. CAYAH provides services for adolescents and young adults for primary care, general medical issues, as well as those particular to developing adolescents including menstrual disorders, eating disorders, comprehensive family planning, transition needs, sexual health, and gender variant care. Most patients are between the ages of 12-26. Patients are seen regularly by adolescent healthcare providers including pediatricians who specialize in adolescent medicine, pediatric and adolescent gynecologists, adolescent medicine fellow physician trainees, pediatric residents, medical students, and advanced practice practitioners including physician assistants and nurse practitioners and their trainees. Outpatient clinics in the Oakland site are held daily, and at the other sites, twice a week. Therapists (Masters level social workers and PhD level psychologists as well as postgraduate trainees, psychology and social work graduate degree trainees with supervision by a psychologist) and social workers are available daily for integrated behavioral health services. The Division has embedded research assistants to assist with clinic-based recruitment efforts. A Youth Research Advisory Board, a group of youth and young adults meets monthly to provide input on research (including review of consent forms, recruitment materials, and protocols) and youth leaders contribute to informing research projects through recruitment and dissemination.
To better assist you with your needs, please fill out this form to provide us with information about your study and the services you request.
We are happy to provide an estimate of our services and capability including a letter of support as a preparatory step to research (e.g. grant proposal) at no cost.
For currently funded studies, we are happy to provide you an estimate of services for 6 months or 1 year.
The main service we currently provide is a self-survey to all youth who come to our clinic as well as at community events (see: http://redcap.link/cayahresearch ). This survey is a one-stop link for youth to indicate which studies they have interest in and their contact information is directly sent to your team. Subjects 12 or younger are not able to fill out the survey. Reach out to cayah@pitt.edu for information regarding recruiting people 12 and younger. We also provide in-person clinical recruitment services from our embedded research staff.
Once we receive your form, we will schedule a 1:1 meeting to discuss how we can best support you. Thank you so much for your interest and your dedication to youth research!

The following questions are the questions we ask on our adolescent self-survey to identify potential participants. Please answer the questions based on your study's I/E criteria for participants who would be INCLUDED based on how they answer (e.g. you only want those who can read or write in English so you select Yes). If the question does not apply to your study, please select "does not apply".
Can you read and write in English?
Yes No Does Not Apply
Can you read or write in Spanish?
Yes No Does Not Apply
Have you completed the 6th grade?
Yes No Does Not Apply
Do you have access to a smartphone (can be a parent's)?
Yes No Does Not Apply
(Answer yes if you require parents to participate in the study.)
Some studies are by yourself.
Others both you and your parent/guardian participate.
Do you think your parent/guardian would want to do a study with you?
If you aren't sure, check yes and you can change your mind later.
Yes No Does Not Apply
Some studies will involve an MRI scan.
This requires you to not have any metal in your body (braces) AND be comfortable being in an enclosed space for several minutes (not claustrophobic).
Would you be okay with getting an MRI scan?
Yes No Does Not Apply
Do you have any mental health problems or do they run in your family?
Yes No Does Not Apply
Would you be willing to come in for in-person visits?
Yes No Does Not Apply
We do have an option to include a second survey to add more specific questions for your particular study and if you are interested can discuss when we meet.
Do participants receive compensation for the study? If yes, describe. If no, describe why not.

Our clinic provides an integrated behavioral health program. We see ages 12-26 for primary care and adolescent medicine consultative care. We have mental health therapists (LCSW, LSW, psychologists) available. Our adolescent medicine providers (physicians, advanced practice practitioners) are mostly comfortable treating depression, anxiety, ADHD, suicidality, eating disorder, panic disorder, unless it is severe or complex or treatment resistant. Then we may refer to a higher level of care or to a psychiatrist who only sees patients who are in therapy with our providers. We are comfortable providing motivational interviewing for brief intervention for substance use but otherwise will refer out for substance use. Our mental health providers see more older adolescents and young adults as opposed to younger. They provide typically every other week therapy for depression, anxiety, panic attack, OCD, phobia, adjustment disorder, ADHD, gender dysphoria, PTSD, and other diagnoses with trauma history. About 30% of our patients do not involve their parent/guardian in treatment. Knowing this information, would you still like to recruit from our clinic?

We recognize and celebrate the importance of young people's perspectives on research design and participation.
To that end, the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine encourages that any researcher who requests assistance with recruitment meet with our Youth Research Advisory Board (YRAB) to present their study.
The group meets on the first Thursday of the month, from 6-8 pm.
